Summer Reading: Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

I spotted Twenties Girl at Costco yesterday and picked it up without even reading the plot description just because it was by Sophie Kinsella. When I got home, I investigated further and found out that this book involved a ghost. I thought it was going to be bad. I was pleasantly surprised.

Kinsella tried something different and I really liked it. Of course, the novel still has some of the characteristics of her Shopaholic series. Girl falls into bad luck at work, meets a boy, messes up relationship with boy, fixes work problem, becomes a hero and makes up with boy. Twenties Girl also has the added touch of a bit of mystery. It's a great chick lit summer read.

  2. I had to read the whole thing in one afternoon. I think it might be better than the Shopaholic series. Sometimes Becky Bloomwood was so annoying, I wanted to yell at her!

  3. I just read this a couple weeks ago and I loved it...I too think it may be better than the Shopaholic series. You're right, Becky Bloomwood can get a bit annoying; then again, so can Lara (with all her pining for her lousy ex). Luckily, Sadie's fire and independence totally makes up for Lara's occasional clinginess.

I also liked how the them of "the new woman" (of the 1920s) mirrors the idea of the modern woman (today). Perhaps it's not heavily intellectual feminist lit, but it does have something of a feminist theme.
