What is business attire?

My husband's boss has been nominated for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year so we have an award ceremony to attend this week. The invitation said "business attire". That's easy for the boys. DH has a new Hugo Boss suit that he has been itching to wear. But I am not so sure what to wear.

Help! What does business attire for the ladies mean?

  1. It's usually pretty much the same for the ladies - business suits. My mister used to work for big 4 in NYC and his parties were always "business attire" which basically means - find 5 female accountants at work and take your ideas from what they're wearing. Skirt, pants or dress suits are usually perfect! Goodluck!

  2. Thanks Pink Julep for the help.

It doesn't sound like it will be an exciting fashion night. I was hoping I could get gussied up.

  3. I think you just need to be really "appropriate". How about one of those fab dresses you have been wearing lately? Like the Martin & Osa one? With great jacket and heels?

  4. I think that as a spouse/partner/guest of an employee, you could get away with dressing up a bit. Obviously, nothing so dramatic that you'd stick out among all the accounting suits, but whatever you wear could be more feminine/prettier. I like Heidi's suggestion of your Martin + Osa dress (which I love, BTW) with a jacket -- maybe also something sparkly as an accessory? Or any other dress/jacket combination, or a "party" top with suit jacket and pants. It may be a big corporate thing, but that doesn't mean they can't appreciate some individuality. :-) Have fun!

  5. Thank you everyone for the help. I'm going to play dress up tonight and see what I can come up with.
